Limerick county and city is filled with a vibrant history and love of sports. Limerick city centre features gems such as King John’s Castle, the Treaty Stone & Thomond Park (home to Munster Rugby), to name just a few, and outside the city you have incredible places to visit such as Curraghchase forest park, the village of Adare and Lough Gur.
A day in Limerick city allows you to explore King John’s Castle, a 13th century castle located on the river Shannon. Nearby you will also discover the Treaty Stone, which was the stone used to sign the Treaty of Limerick in 1691! For sports fans, you can also visit Thomond Park stadium (tours available to book) and see the home of Munster Rugby, a huge passion for natives of Limerick.
Outside the city, if you want to stretch those legs, a visit to nearby Curraghchase forest park is a treat. This is a Coillte run woodland and lakeside estate, set on the grounds of an 18th century stately home. With lots of looped walkways and trails to explore, take in the beautiful sights and be at home in nature in this tranquill escape from city life.
A visit to Adare, just outside the city, is another “must do” on any list when visiting Limerick. This picturesque village features a 14th century friary, a 13th century abbey and charming thatched cottages. While in Adare we love to take in a meal at The Blue Door Restaurant which is located in one of these beautiful old cottages and soak up the warm and inviting atmosphere and sample their divine cuisine!
For even more history why not plan a trip to nearby Lough Gur – a visit to the heritage centre will really help you to understand the history of this magical place which is considered one of Ireland’s most important archaeological sites.
We hope this brief list gives you some sense of the variety of things to see and do when visiting Limerick city and we hope you enjoy your next stay there!
